The definition of cleanliness in today's Sant Gadgebaba Cleanliness Campaign is not only simply removing of garbage but also includes beautification and care of public open spaces and gardens.
Public open spaces and gardens have an important impact on human emotions such as security, happiness and creative aspects of behaviour. Urban public spaces can give a peaceful feeling of oneness with self. This is exactly what was advocated by the great sages from the ancient times like Sant Gadgebaba.
Gardens are termed as lungs of the city. CIDCO had transferred 113 gardens to NMMC on March 23, 1999. Now, there are 115 gardens covering an area of 4,96,420 sq m area in NMMC. In the year 2001-2002, NMMC has started work of development of 25 gardens. Out of these 2 gardens in Vashi and Nerul zone each, are being developed as theme based gardens/parks.
